Chery Kang is a correspondent for CNBC Asia Pacific. She is based in Hong Kong and covers Asia-Pacific business news across all CNBC programming.

Chery has covered some of the region’s biggest news events such as the 2017 North Korea missile crisis, impeachment of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye, 2017 South Korean Presidential election, Trump-Kim Summits in Singapore and Hanoi, the arrest of Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn scandal in 2018 and the 2019 Hong Kong protests.

Chery graduated from the HKUST-NYU Stern Masters of Science in Global Finance (Class of 2018) and Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul with a degree in International Studies

Prof Utpal Bhattacharya
Chair Professor

Prof Utpal Bhattacharya is the Chair Professor at HKUST Department of Finance, and the Executive Editor of the journal Financial Management.

He received his Bachelor of Technology at IIT, Kanpur, India; his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, India; and his PhD from Columbia University, USA. Prof Bhattacharya previously taught at Indiana, Iowa, Chicago, MIT and Duke.

Prof Bhattacharya's research is about the dark side of financial markets. He believes that "the price of capitalism is eternal vigilance." His publications have appeared in top-tier finance, accounting and economics journals like the Journal of Finance, the Accounting Review and the Journal of Economic Theory.  His research has been featured in full-length stories more than a hundred times in various media across the world. He has been invited to present his research in more than 225 institutions in 35 countries in 5 continents.

Prof Andrew Chiu (PhD & MBA)
Adjunct Associate Professor

Prof Andrew Chiu teaches Quantitative Trading at HKUST and he is the founder of a proprietary trading firm - Algometric Trading - specializing in the systematic trading of stocks and derivatives on U.S. exchanges.

Prof Chiu completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He received his MBA degree and PhD degree in Finance from HKUST.

Prof Chiu’s research interests Option Pricing, Empirical Asset Pricing, Machine Learning and Quantitative Trading.

Prof Véronique A. Lafon-Vinais
Associate Professor of Business Education 

Prof Veronique Lafon-Vinais is currently the Associate Professor of Business Education at HKUST Department of Finance. She is also the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs (School of Business and Management), Associate Director of World Bachelor in Business Program and the Executive Director (Career Development and Corporate Outreach).

Prof Lafon-Vinais is a seasoned financial market professional with over 20 years of banking and capital markets experience. She has worked in all the major financial markets and has extensive experience in all the major debt markets. 

Prof Lafon-Vinais joined Credit Agricole in Paris in 1980 after graduating from HEC; she moved to First Chicago (now part of JP Morgan) in London in 1984 then to Chicago in 1990. In 1991 Veronique joined Union Investissements, the M&A and corporate finance subsidiary of Credit Agricole in Paris to work on various M&A and corporate finance advisory projects. 

Prof Lafon-Vinais moved to Hong Kong in 1994 joining First Chicago as Managing Director, Head of Financial Markets, Asia Pacific. She joined Standard Chartered Bank plc as Head of Treasury Origination in 2000 and retired from banking in 2001 and joined HKUST.

Prof Abhiroop Mukherjee
Associate Professor

Prof Abhiroop Mukherjee is a Liwei Huang Associate Professor of Finance at HKUST. He joined HKUST in 2010 after receiving his PhD in Economics from Yale University. 

Prof Mukherjee studies issues related to behavioral and institutional finance, and his research has been published in all of the three top academic journals in finance.

Prof Mukherjee has received recognition for both teaching and research, and some of his work has been used in applied settings by Investment Funds, Central Banks and Policy Think Tanks, both in Asia and in the U.S.
