HKUST Business School Ideas Lunch Series – Alumni Online Sharing: From Food to Goods – What’s Next for Online Stores?

From Food to Goods – What’s next for Online Stores?

Having featured successful alumni across eCommerce, Retail, IT, F&BReal EstateTransportation and Beauty industries, the Ideas Lunch Series launched last year attracted significant viewership and overwhelming positive feedbacks. In 2021, we continue this lunchtime chit-chat series featuring diverse alumni with their uniquely interesting stories.

On Jul 28 (Wed), BBA alumnus, Joshua TSUI, Head of Marketplace/Shops of foodpanda, will share and interact with the alumni community online.

Door-to-door delivery has become more popular recently, driven by both customer behavior and cost. foodpanda, among many, has succeeded in claiming its big share of the food delivering sector – operating in 70 cities and still expanding. Now it is eyeing on becoming the chosen delivery platform for products other than food as well. How is it like to grow a “startup” product line within an already well-established startup company? We have invited Joshua to share the challenges and opportunities his team encounters while expanding the business of quick-commerce into groceries. With years of experience in building up teams and strategizing across various industries, Joshua will also share his unique philosophy and advices on leadership, company growth and his own career development.

What makes the webinar more special is that it will be moderated by Joshua’s favorite professor back in his HKUST days - Prof Jiewen HONG, Head of Marketing Department.

Growing up in Canada, Joshua's professional journey started (naturally) at HKUST. Studying a dual major BBA, in two vastly different fields of Finance & Marketing, this would serve as a preview to the career he will end up having. After an internship in his penultimate year, he spent four years in Morgan Stanley, in the Equities Middle Office, before he decided a career in finance was not what he was looking for. Grasping an opportunity, he shifted careers into the corporate world, first with a stint in turning around Tom Lee Music, finishing as their Assistant Director, and then another four years flying around the world as Chief of Staff at Meyer Corporation. True to the nebulous nature of his title, he did projects related to international business management, product development, digital transformation, and even an ode to his classes in finance: some M&A projects. He is currently the Head of Shops at foodpanda, leading the newest vertical of the pink panda company, where he built the team and is attempting to create a new shopping paradigm in the minds of the Hong Kong people, much like the company already has done in the world of food delivery.
