In an era where technology is reshaping financial landscapes, Henry WONG, a graduate of HKUST Business School’s MSc program in Investment Management (2012), exemplifies a new breed of innovators transforming how we understand money.

A Journey of Interdisciplinary Innovation

Henry's career trajectory illustrates the power of interdisciplinary education and continuous learning. As an alumnus of the HKUST Business School, Henry has seamlessly bridged technology and finance, with a journey from computer engineering to cryptocurrency trading that highlights the dynamic potential of tech-driven financial landscapes.

Starting with a computer engineering degree at HKUST, Wong discovered his passion for cryptography through Professor Samuel CHENSON, who encouraged him to explore the intricate world of secure digital communications. This early exposure laid the groundwork for his future in digital finance.

"HKUST was more than just an educational institution for me," reflects Henry, now Senior Vice President and Head of Derivatives at Crypto.com. "It was a crucible of innovation, where I learned not just technical skills, but the art of adapting to complex, evolving industries."

Unlocking Financial Insights Through Education

Recognizing the need for a deeper financial understanding, Henry pursued a Master's in Finance, a decision that proved transformative. Describing his postgraduate degree as an eye-opening journey, he gained insights into the nuanced world of financial markets and learned how central banks operate—knowledge that would later prove crucial in cryptocurrency trading.

"My undergraduate degree was the key that helped me open the door to technology," he states, "but my master's study was the ticket that allowed me to enter the financial system."

Henry's career has spanned electronic trading, investment banking, and now cryptocurrency platforms, where he contributes to systems trading billions daily. His recommendation to aspiring professionals is clear: "Don't make excuses, continuously learn, and always position yourself by understanding market demands."

Navigating the Future of FinTech

According to Henry, the current FinTech landscape is at an exciting crossroads. He sees blockchain and digital assets transforming finance, with tokenization and cryptocurrency offering innovative solutions to traditional financial limitations.

"Tokenization will play a massive role," he predicts, "but it requires significant government support." He sees digital assets as a potential game-changer in international trade, addressing limitations of traditional currencies.

However, he notes that balancing regulation and innovation is key. While AI will exponentially increase productivity, blockchain provides transparent transactions. He argues that the future isn't about replacing systems, but creating more efficient, accessible financial ecosystems.

“The crypto industry will represent more than just an investment field, it will be about innovation and improving efficiency,” he explained.

That said, Henry’s perspectives on regulation is nuanced and critical.

"The world needs a delicate balance," he said. "Over-regulation can kill innovation, but no regulation creates chaos."

He explained that while regulators may want to project consumers, but they must strike the right balance between innovation and regulation.

"When regulation becomes so intense that financial institutions can't function, it ends up damaging the economy instead of protecting it," he said.

Embracing Lifelong Learning

With these in mind, his advice to current students is straightforward: "Learn Python, understand AI tools, and never stop acquiring new skills. If you want to learn something, acquire knowledge—you can do it today. There's no one stopping you from learning more."

Reflecting on his time at HKUST, Henry describes it as "a peaceful environment for concentrating on study" and considers it the "Rolls Royce of universities". He emphasizes that the institution's impact goes beyond academics, stating: "It trained my mental strength, preparing me to face different challenges in work and life."

Henry’s journey underscores a critical message: in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, interdisciplinary knowledge and adaptability are key. His path from computer engineering to finance and cryptocurrency demonstrates that with the right education and mindset, professional boundaries can be transcended. As FinTech continues to revolutionize our understanding of money, alumni like Henry are not just observers but active architects of this transformative future.
